I mentioned in my previous post that today was a great day of worship. Last night, however, I was wrestling with the fact that I have a project due Tuesday that is not quite complete and that I would not be able to work on it were I to truly “call the Sabbath a delight”. At the end of my wrestling I purposed not to work on my project and instead to enjoy the day of worship and rest God has given His people. During this wrestling I remembered a few words on the Sabbath that Jollyblogger quoted from Laura Brumley. I pass them on to you.
I am floored by God’s readiness to grant people like us free access to hearing, singing, praying, and feeding upon his Word every week. And we’re told to spend the whole day celebrating this reality, keeping in mind that it is a mere foretaste? I’m convinced that there are no blessings in this life comparable to a Sunday rightly spent.
At Grace Bible Church we had a great day of worship. This morning we worshiped God in song, in prayer, in the hearing of His Word, and in partaking of the Lord’s Supper. One of the hymns that really moved me today was And Can It Be That I Should Gain? Throughout the rest of the day the lyrics were running through my head.
And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain?
For me, who Him to death pur-sued?Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!He left His Father’s throne above,
So free, so infinite His grace!
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for all His chosen race!‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!Long my imprisoned spirit lay
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night.
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke the dungeon flamed with light! My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!No condemnation now I dread:
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine!
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,Bold I approach th’eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Amazing love! how can it be
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!
This morning’s sermon was from Hebrews 2:5-9. I won’t try to summarize it since you can listen to it here or download an outline of it here. What I will say is that it was food for my soul and if you are interested you can find the first 3 sermons in the Hebrews series here.
This evening we continued our day of worship with more singing, a time hearing God’s Word, and praying together as a church. Typically we celebrate the Lord’s Supper each Sunday evening, but on the last Sunday of the month we partake in the morning. We do this so that those who are unable to attend the evening services can partake of the Lord’s Supper. This being the last Sunday of the month we spent extra time praying which is always enjoyable.
So that’s a quick recap of the day.
In case you missed it last year check out National Lampoon’s Christmas Cathedral. Bonus points to anyone besides Juice who can correctly identify the church in the photos.
My friend Justin needed to compare two iTunes libraries. Read about how he did it.
