Lifelong Learning

Yesterday I wrote that I’ll be finishing college in about a month. The end of my formal education (at least for now) doesn’t mean I’m done learning. I love learning and will continue to do all I can to further my intellectual growth throughout the rest of my life. Podcasting presents a great opportunity for doing just that.

Schools like UC Berkeley are now podcasting many class lectures. After finishing school in May I plan to begin listening to the lectures from Econ 100A: Economic Analysis - Micro. There are many other classes available. I encourage you to check out Berkeley’s offerings if you’re interested in getting exposure to subject areas that may be outside of your expertise or training.

Graduation Countdown

In about a month I will finally be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. It has been a long, but rewarding, road and I’m looking forward to being finished. I’ve put a graduation countdown badge in the sidebar to the right (on the main page). If you’re reading this in an RSS reader you’ll need to visit this blog directly to see what I’m talking about.

The Best of Both Worlds

This semester I’m taking a class entitled “Society and Culture in Early Modern Europe”. We’ve spent a considerable time reading and writing about the witch hunts and witchcraft trials that consumed Europe between the 15th and 18th centuries.

One rather disturbing witchcraft trial involved three women convicted of being witches on the isle of Guernsey in 1617. The isle of Guernsey, located in the English Channel, was a French-speaking possession of the English crown at the time. The women were hanged according to English custom and then were burned according to French custom. What an excellent blend of cultural values! (that’s sarcasm incase you didn’t pick up on it).

An Extended Spring Break?

It looks like we’ll be getting a few more days off after Spring Break. CSU faculty have voted to begin striking next month. With about six more weeks of classes left in my college career I sure hope this doesn’t prolong my stay.

From SignOnSanDiego.com:

Faculty at the largest public university system in America on Wednesday voted to strike over a bitter salary standoff that has professors blasting recent executive pay hikes while bemoaning instructor compensation that they contend is too meager.

California State University, which includes San Diego State and Cal State San Marcos, plan to begin rolling two-day strikes next month which will start on each campus on different dates.
