Science and Faith: Dr. Francis S. Collins

Dr. Francis S. Collins PhotoCNN has an intersting article by Dr. Francis S. Collins, director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, on why he sees no conflict between science and religious faith. Below is an excerpt from the article.

As a graduate student in physical chemistry in the 1970s, I was an atheist, finding no reason to postulate the existence of any truths outside of mathematics, physics and chemistry. But then I went to medical school, and encountered life and death issues at the bedsides of my patients. Challenged by one of those patients, who asked “What do you believe, doctor?”, I began searching for answers.

Alister McGrath

Alister McGrath

Recently I wrote a post about Richard Dawkins, an outspoken atheist from Oxford University. Alister McGrath is another Oxford University professor, but with a much different view of the universe. McGrath is a former atheist who converted to Christianity while an undergraduate at Oxford. He is currently Professor of Historical Theology at Oxford University. He’s written two critique’s of Dawkins’ ideas and frequently gives lectures related to these critiques. McGrath’s website contains links to audio, PDF transcripts, and PowerPoint presentations of some of his lectures. Be sure to check the site out.

Something From Nothing

As I’ve been reading about, listening to, and watching material on Darwinian evolution, or a certain scientist’s version of it, there is a question that keeps coming to mind. That question is this - if there ever was a time where there was nothing (no planets, no people, no matter, nothing) where did it all come from? How is it even possible for something to come from nothing?

Richard Dawkins

Who is Richard Dawkins? Dawkins is a professor at Oxford University and an outspoken atheist who considers most other atheists to be too soft. His arguments against religion and religious belief are something Christians should become familiar with in order to respond intelligently to those who hold similar views. Below are a few links to Dawkins related material.

Global Warming and Cooling

I found an interesting article over at RealClearPolitics.com

Science magazine (Dec. 10, 1976) warned of “extensive Northern Hemisphere glaciation.” Science Digest (February 1973) reported that “the world’s climatologists are agreed” that we must “prepare for the next ice age.” The Christian Science Monitor (”Warning: Earth’s Climate is Changing Faster Than Even Experts Expect,” Aug. 27, 1974) reported that glaciers “have begun to advance,” “growing seasons in England and Scandinavia are getting shorter” and “the North Atlantic is cooling down about as fast as an ocean can cool.” Newsweek agreed (”The Cooling World,” April 28, 1975) that meteorologists “are almost unanimous” that catastrophic famines might result from the global cooling that the New York Times (Sept. 14, 1975) said “may mark the return to another ice age.” The Times (May 21, 1975) also said “a major cooling of the climate is widely considered inevitable” now that it is “well established” that the Northern Hemisphere’s climate “has been getting cooler since about 1950.”
